Kahului along the west Maui coast is beautiful. just make sure you are driving via HI-30 S and HI-30 W--do NOT drive I-340, the Kahekili Highway
You can drive as far south as La Perouse Bay to see the old lava fields, and some hikes. (South Kihei Road)
NW Maui is pretty as well - good alternate to Road to Hana....just no waterfalls.
Ioa Valley State Park - $5 parking. Check to see if open before going. Secret hike 2.5 miles - AllTrails
Road to Hana - bring: wipes, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, dramamine/wrist bands, water shoes, towels, water, cash, National Park Pass, jacket - Windy
Pā Ka‘oao Hike - Haleakala - 1/2 mile - good for sunset. Also good sunset place is a small hill near Observatory. Limited parking. Sunset is 6:00
Sunset Secret Spot - Leleiwi Overlook. Mile marker 17.5. Parking lot on right (heading up). Cross road for trail. There is a small parking pocket along the road and a hidden hiking trail that can be easily missed. The hiking trail will lead you to Leleiwi Overlook – you can see Haleakala Crater from here.
But we encourage you to look the other way – towards the Sunset. The scenery is absolutely sensational!
